Are You Ready for What Comes Next?
You’ve built a business, or have been a great employee, given it your time, energy and heart. Now you’re thinking about the next chapter - retirement. But stepping away isn’t just about signing papers. It’s about being ready - mentally, emotionally and financially.
Start with an Honest Conversation
Good planning starts with honesty - especially with yourself. What do you really want? What does your ideal retirement look like? These aren’t always easy questions to answer with family or friends. Emotions can get in the way. That’s why it helps to speak with someone independent - someone who listens without judgment and speaks without bias. With me, there are no hidden agendas. Just straight talk and clear thinking.
Your Exit Blueprint
Together, we’ll map out the practical steps:
-
How and when to transition out of your business
-
The financial picture—selling your business, pensions or other income streams & expenses
-
What you’ll do with your time and energy when work is no longer in the driver’s seat
We’ll also tackle the harder questions:
-
Do you have the right health insurance and a Plan B if illness strikes?
-
Is your estate plan, will and power of attorney in order?
-
Have you considered the tax implications of how you sell and draw down your savings?
The Psychological Shift
Retirement isn’t just logistical - it’s personal. Losing your daily title, routine and work-family can feel disorienting. Many executives quietly struggle with this. We’ll talk openly about that transition and build a “trial phase” into your plan - so you can test your dream retirement (like renting abroad for a few months) before you commit fully.
The Relationship Factor
If you have a partner, are you both on the same page? Conflicting visions of free time can create unexpected tension. We’ll make sure your plan fits both of you, not just one.
Where Will You Live?
Maybe you love where you are. Maybe you’ve always dreamed of spending part of the year abroad - in Europe, Asia, or the Americas. Living in a new place can be exhilarating. People are remarkably welcoming everywhere, and healthcare in the Western world - and in parts of Asia - is excellent. Rent a place for six months and see how it feels. If it’s not right, you can always try somewhere else.
The Reality of Retirement Today
If you’re 65 and living in the West with solid finances, you can reasonably expect 15 - or even more years of active, fulfilling retirement. The key is planning well. It’s not complicated, but it does require attention. The last thing you want is to spend your freedom worrying about things that could have been handled in advance.
A Gentle Truth
I’ve seen people work themselves to exhaustion, filling oversized homes with things they rarely use, often to keep up appearances. In the end, none of that matters. Your kids will likely sell what they inherit. Your photos will eventually be tucked away. And over time, even memories fade.
So here’s the real question:
Are you living for others or for yourself? Don't understand me wrong, I am completely behind the idea to give to your children a secure start, a healthy inheritance and if the business should stay in the family, good guidance. However, remember you have one life. Enjoy it while you can. Be a little selfish. Invest in experiences, not just possessions. Stay socially engaged, keep your mind and body active, and find purpose beyond the office through volunteering, mentoring, or passion projects. And don’t wait until it’s too late to start.
